How Fast Can Mold Grow After Water Damage? The 24–48 Hour Window Homeowners Should Know

A leaking water heater. A slow plumbing leak. A roof leak after heavy rain. A wet crawlspace. An overflowing appliance.


Water damage does not always look like an emergency at first. But when moisture reaches drywall, insulation, wood, carpet, subflooring, or other building materials, the clock can start moving quickly.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wet or damp materials should generally be dried within 24–48 hours after a leak or spill. When materials are dried within that window, mold growth can often be prevented.

That makes the first couple of days after discovering unwanted moisture especially important.

What Should You Do After Finding Water Damage?

First, identify and correct the source of the moisture.

Dry affected materials as quickly as possible and investigate areas where water may have traveled.
